Upgrading to Strenx® high-strength structural steel brings environmental benefits from day one. With a stronger steel, you can build lighter structures that reduce fuel consumption and associated CO₂ emissions.
Looking for ways to improve your equipment’s environmental footprint? Strenx® can help you succeed. SSAB’s current steelmaking process for Strenx® is already the world’s most CO2 efficient. And when using this steel to make stronger and lighter equipment, this brings even more environmental advantages compared to using ordinary steel.
With the launch of SSAB’s HYBRIT technology, hydrogen instead of coal will be used to remove oxygen from the iron ore. This is a major step for the steel industry, and Strenx® will be a game-changer for producers of applications in high-strength structural steel, and consequently eliminating the carbon dioxide emissions. The fossil-free grades of Strenx® will naturally deliver the same high performance as today’s Strenx® steel.
To show the savings you can achieve by upgrading to Strenx® steel, under our EcoUpgraded program we perform calculations on actual equipment. One such example goes as follows: A timber trailer chassis’ longitudinal beams were upgraded from a steel with a yield strength of 310 MPa to Strenx® 700MC with a yield strength of 700 MPa. The upgraded parts became 350 kg lighter. Other design changes contributed to a further 150 kg in weight savings, increasing the trailer´s total load capacity by 500 kg.
Lifetime reduction of CO2 by 25 tonnes and fuel by 8100 liters. The CO2 emissions from the production of the steel used are offset after 7 months, and from then on, the savings will continue.
Strenx® high-strength structural steel can be used in thinner dimensions than ordinary steel and still make products stronger. This has positive impacts on the environment: Since less steel is needed for an application, resources are saved and the product becomes lighter, which saves fuel for each load hauled.
We love numbers! Read more about the environmental performance of the Strenx® products in the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). They are third-party reviewed in accordance with ISO 14025 and EN 15804.
