Johnny Sjöström new President and CEO of SSAB
Johnny Sjöström has been appointed President and CEO of SSAB. He is currently head of the division SSAB Special Steels. Johnny Sjöström will start his new position on October 28, 2024, succeeding Martin Lindqvist who previously announced that he is leaving the company for a board career.

SSAB intends to divest its rock bolt business unit in Virsbo to U.S.-based Jennmar
SSAB has entered into an agreement with the intention to divest its expandable rock bolts unit in Virsbo to U.S.-based Jennmar. In total, 66 people are affected by the acquisition and have received an offer to continue their employment with Jennmar.

SSAB receives environmental permit to transform steel plant in Luleå
SSAB has received the necessary permit from the Land and Environmental Court in Umeå to build and operate a mini-mill in Luleå, Sweden, that will replace the current steel plant. The permit will enable a technology shift that will have significant positive effects on the environment and the climate. It will also allow SSAB to meet the high demand for our unique steels and to strengthen our future competitiveness.

SSAB participating in EU project to promote hydrogen gas in industry
21 January 2025TWINGHY, a project co-funded by the EU, mainly aims to introduce hydrogen as a fuel to replace natural gas in reheating furnaces in the steel sector. The project will develop a digital twin to control furnace behavior and optimize operations. The technology can be useful in more of SSAB's different processes.

Start of short-distance deliveries by e-truck from SSAB in Hämeenlinna
15 January 2025SSAB Europe and Kuljettava Oy (earlier VR Transpoint road logistics) have a joint project to electrify heavy-duty transports. Heavy-duty vehicle charging points have been installed at SSAB’s Hämeenlinna Works and Kuljettava Oy has invested in two fully electric Scania semi-trailer combinations, the first of which started deliveries of steel products on January 9, 2025 to SSAB’s customers within up to 100-km radius of the Hämeenlinna Works.

SSAB to donate roofing products for reconstruction in Ukraine
09 December 2024SSAB and its subsidiary Ruukki Construction will this year again donate roofing products to the non-governmental organization OperationAid for the reconstruction of houses in Ukraine. In addition, SSAB will donate almost 20 tonnes of steel to make around 750 field stoves.
