By introducing SSAB Zero™ steel to its products, Cargotec is increasing its efforts to enable more sustainable cargo and load handling.
Cargotec is one of the world’s leading providers of cargo and load handling equipment and aspires to be the global leader in sustainable cargo flow. An integral part of these efforts is to reduce its upstream emissions, where the steel used to produce its products is a significant contributor to the company’s carbon footprint.
However, now Cargotec is taking its partnership with SSAB to the next level by introducing SSAB Zero™ to its production line. SSAB Zero™ is made from recycled steel and produced using fossil-free energy resulting in zero fossil carbon emission (less than 0.05 kg CO2e emissions per kg steel in scope 1 and 2) in operations, including purchased energy and transportation. Neither SSAB nor Cargotec engage in carbon emission offsetting activities, and since recycled steel is the only raw material used, SSAB Zero™ supports the circular economy.
"Steel is a major element in our equipment’s carbon footprint, and SSAB Zero™ helps grow our low-emission offering.”
“As a provider of heavy cargo and loading equipment, we are a major user of steel. Whenever possible, we give preference to materials with a smaller carbon footprint than traditional alternatives, and SSAB Zero™ provides a low-carbon and circular solution. This is an important step on the journey towards fossil-free steel, and a great opportunity for Cargotec to grow its low-emission offering,” says Päivi Koivisto, Vice President Sustainability at Cargotec.
The delivery of SSAB Zero™ is just the latest step in an ongoing partnership between SSAB and Cargotec. In addition to SSAB Zero™, SSAB also produces SSAB Fossil-free™ steel, another type of zero-emission steel based on iron-ore without fossil fuels, which Cargotec is also exploring.
In September 2022, Hiab – a subsidiary of Cargotec focused on on-road loading equipment, used SSAB Fossil-free™ steel to produce the world’s first load-handling equipment, a MULTILIFT hooklift, made with fossil-free steel.
Other customers are also using SSAB Zero™. Read more on why and how.
We are taking the next step towards a more sustainable future.
